‘Made by Matthew’ is the creative outlet of Matthew Hutcheson, a furniture maker who crafts bespoke sculptural pieces by hand from native hardwoods.
Matthew is originally from Scotland and now based in Belfast. He studied Product Design Engineering at Strathclyde University in Glasgow, then trained as a cabinet maker, and has worked in various design houses and workshops around the UK and overseas.
“My practice is focused on creating sculptural furniture using native woods which are ergonomic, practical and beautiful. I aim to let the natural figure and character of the wood play a part in the design of the final piece. Each piece is unique and the wood used is chosen from local sawmills specifically so the shape and grain will reflect and enhance the design.
I use a mix of traditional cabinet making techniques and modern tools to make my furniture. Where possible I will keep the live natural edge of the timber intact and will turn knots, cracks and decaying parts within the timber into design features. I aim to create high quality, durable furniture to be used well and to last generations.”
